Mar 12, 2019 Microsoft has recently released a new capability where you can connect an existing SharePoint site to a new Office 365 Group. But, there is a big but your site has to.
So, why do we need a pro-con list? Well, the truth remains that people have mixed feelings about the cloud – some love it, others despise it. However, the majority of people find that the benefits of the cloud outweigh the downfalls.
Here are a few of the pros and cons of Microsoft’s Office 365 cloud:
Office 365 Pros:
- Outsourcing – You can outsource the hassle of installing, managing patching and upgrading extremely complex software systems, it’s that simple.
- Updated – Microsoft 365 guarantees up-to-date software and security by Microsoft.
- Team approach – Users are equipped with a team of engineers who are extremely specialized and are experts at hosting the Office 365 cloud software.
- Service – Using cloud software over the Internet means immediate service. You simply sign up and you’re ready. Without the cloud, a SharePoint deployment could take months.
Office 365 Cons:
- Reliance – Cloud services rely on your network and bandwidth, meaning, if your internet goes down you don’t have access to your software and data. Microsoft doesn’t control how you access the Internet and can’t account for these kinds of failures.
- Questioning security – With the cloud, data is hosted in Microsoft’s data center. That can be both a benefit and a detriment, but for those who are nervous about where their information is, this might be a concern.
- Necessity – The question, “Do I really need this?” is often asked when it comes to Office 365. While it has everything pretty much rolled into one nice package, there are also many other ways to access these kinds of resources in a less comprehensive way.
As with any pro-con list the best method is to weigh your options and then see which one might integrate best into your office. Everyone has their opinion about products or programs, but our best advice is to trust what works best for you.
